WARD Installation Guide
Thank you for choosing the WARD (Wall Anchored Rifle Dock). Installation takes about 10 minutes. For the strongest, most secure hold, we recommend mounting the WARD directly into a wall stud.
What's in the Box
- WARD Wall Mount
- 3x GRK #10 x 3-1/8" Structural Screws
- T25 Torx Bit (if ordered)
Tools You'll Need
- Drill or impact driver
- T25 Torx bit
- Stud finder
- Pencil
- Level
Before You Start
- Pick a comfortable height. Since the rifle lifts up and out of the WARD to remove it, mount it at a height where you can easily lift your rifle out. Mounting it too high makes it harder to grab quickly when you need it.
- Leave plenty of room. Make sure there's enough space around the rifle to grab it and maneuver it off the wall easily. For example, stay at least 6 inches away from inside corners so the rifle has clearance from the side wall.
- Watch for wiring. Avoid mounting directly above or below outlets and light switches, or level with them on the same wall, since electrical wiring often runs through studs in these areas. A stud finder with electrical wire detection is ideal, and always check before drilling.
Installation Steps
Find the stud. Use a stud finder to locate a wood stud, then mark both edges and the center with a pencil. The WARD is designed to be mounted at the center of a stud so all three screws get a full, solid hold in the wood, so centering it is important.
Mark your holes. Hold the WARD against the wall with the center of the mount lined up on your stud center mark. Use a level across the top edge to get it straight, then mark all three screw holes.
Check your marks (recommended). The included GRK structural screws are designed to drive straight into wood studs, so pilot holes aren't required. However, drilling a small 1/8" pilot hole or tapping in a thin finish nail at each mark is a quick way to confirm all three screws will land in solid wood. You should feel steady resistance all the way in after passing through the drywall. If it suddenly gets easy, you've missed the stud, so adjust your position before mounting.
Drive the bottom screw first. Hold the WARD in place and drive the bottom center screw until it's snug, but not fully tight. Since it's centered, the mount can still pivot, which lets you fine-tune it.
Level and drive the top screws. Rotate the WARD until the top edge is level, then drive both top screws.
Seat all three screws. Drive each screw until the head sits flush in its recess, then stop. Overdriving the screws won't add any strength to the mount and can cause damage. Take the last few turns slowly, especially with an impact driver.
Check the mount. Give the WARD a firm tug in a few directions. It should feel solid with no movement.
Using Drywall Anchors
Stud mounting is strongly recommended, but if a stud isn't available where you need it, drywall anchors can be used for lighter rifles.
- Heavy-duty self-drilling (threaded) anchors or toggle-style anchors are preferred for the best hold.
- Use the screws that come with your anchors, not the included GRK screws.
- When using anchors, limit your rifle to 8 lbs total, including optic, light, sling, and loaded magazine.
- Holding strength depends on your drywall thickness and the type of anchor you use, so check your anchor's weight rating before mounting.
- Any heavier rifle should be mounted directly into a stud.
Hanging Your Rifle
To hang your rifle, slot the buffer tube into the WARD and let it settle into place. To remove it, simply lift the rifle up slightly out of the slot and it comes right off the wall.
